Photos at Waveland

Occasionally on cold or wet days, I'll take the dogs over to walk at Waveland.

It gives us a change of scenery without having to drive far. And the dogs can spend most of it off leash without me having to walk much :) It's kind of my lazy day walk.

Ye Old Bourbon Barrel

Nice posing, Porter!

Um Stout, not so much... He still needs work in the modeling department!

"Why does Porter get to be on the barrel when I'm stuck down here?"

Mini-Burro!

Can you see what they are looking at?

It's a mini-burro! They are like the corgis of the donkey world  :)  Big ears, short legs...

Now I have a frame of reference for when I call Porter a "little jackass..."

Another Hike In The Woods, This Time With Ticks!

John & I took the dogs on another hike down at the Kentucky River Palisades. We ventured back to the Sally Brown Nature Preserve.

We took the trail to the right. For future reference: do not take the trail to the right again until fall!

It started out pleasant enough, until the trail wound through a large grassy area. We came out the other side crawling with ticks! Ugh.

We were able to brush most of them off us & the dogs before they got to the skin. Most of them...  Ugh.

Sorry if I grossed anyone out! But I can't look at these photos and not think about the ticks...

More Spring in Kentucky...

The iconic horse farm fence of Kentucky, complete with bluegrass...

The ever popular stone fence...

That apparently houses Kentucky rodents!

Stout says "Wait, what? Rodents?"

Derby Day!

If you live in Kentucky, it's almost mandatory that you celebrate on Derby Day!

So what do you need to celebrate the Derby?  Outrageous hats, of course!

Both hats were made with Dollar Store items. Classy!

Porter is modeling my uptown pink zebra print hat,
complete with roses, ribbons, & a small trophy!

Stout is modeling John's hat, outfitted with various drinking glasses & a pinwheel.
He kind of resembles a pimp, no?

I think you can see here how Porter felt about wearing this hat...

Fun fact: Stout got his registered name from last year's Derby winner "I'll Have Another."

Hanging Tobacco

Another Kentucky themed post  :)

It's that time of year: cutting & hanging tobacco. I couldn't hardly take photos inside the barn, the smell burned my nose & eyes. So I didn't want to make the dogs stay in there too long either!

More Classic Kentucky Scenery

Classic Kentucky

I've lived in Kentucky for 15 years now. Sometimes I still can't get over how scenic it is, especially compared to the corn & pigs of Iowa  :)

I think a lot of the people who grew up here in the Bluegrass don't appreciate the real beauty of it.

I took a little detour on the way home from our herding lesson this week so I could get some photos of the Brew Crew with some "classic Kentucky" scenery.

Actually I take this route pretty frequently because it is so pretty, but I usually don't have my camera  :)

Horse Farms

The entrances are always landscaped

This farm (Shadwell) has 5 or so of these same fancy gates

The classic horse farm fencing

A different kind of "classic Kentucky."
Stout is demonstrating the "stereotypical Kentucky redneck"

And my favorite: the stone fences

There were even Thoroughbreds in the pasture behind them,
but I couldn't get them into the photo  :(
