Weenie Bob Champion!

Say hello to the 2012 Weenie Bob Champion!

Yes, Porter beat all the terriers at the Bluegrass Working Terrier Association's Spring Fling to bring home the Weenie Bob title!

Just what is the Weenie Bob? Check out our friend Lili competing below:

Lili did it in just over 2 seconds. Porter did it in just over 1 second  :)  Porter got that weiner in the blink of an eye! So fast actually that Jodi didn't even get it on video  :)

But long before his weenie bobbing exploits, Porter & Stout enjoyed participating in more terrier-like fun & games. First they watched the races: jack russell, daschund, and even chihuahua.

As you can see above, Porter gets a little excited when they start running that lure.

We started the morning with a little go-to-ground. Above is a photo of Lili coming out of the tunnel for the first time.

Porter placed 2nd in the "miscellaneous breed" go to ground  :)

Porter also got 4th in the "miscellaneous breed" barn hunt.

The barn hunt was a little different this year. They had rat tubes hidden in hay bales spread throughout a small section of the barn. But only one of the tubes actually had rats in it. Your job is to identify which one of the tubes has the rats by how your dog signals. I actually guessed it right this year: the tube Porter nudged hard with his nose was the one with the rats!

And finally Porter's absolute favorite: Lure Coursing!

Even Stout got in on the action: I signed him up for lure coursing!

I had been a little unsure if he would figure it out or even like it, but I need not have worried! He watched that lure zip by once and he was hooked! He was pulling & barking just like Porter! And just 3 seconds slower!

He even got 4th place in his division!

So all in all, it was a very good day at the Terrier Trial! The Brews Brothers were so exhausted they fell asleep on the concrete during the awards ceremony...

Update On Things Stout Has Chewed...

It's been ahile since I've updated on the things Stout has chewed. Unfortuantely it's not because he has stopped chewing, but because he has slowed down some  :)

Until this week:

My glasses

John's glasses

Our bar stool now has a gap in the rung

The guilty party

Happy Birthday Zero Kitty!

Happy 16th Birthday to the most bad-a$$ stripey cat ever!

We got Zero way back during my college years. I remember going to the Humane Society where they turned us down for adoption (we were renters, college students, poor...). So off we went to the pet store where they asked no questions  :)

She was the only one awake in her cage, terrorozing her sleeping friends. That should have been a clue...

She survived a year living the college life with me & 3 male room mates. She does still sport the kink in her tail from that frozen can of orange juice falling out of the freezer...

She moved to Kentucky with me, riding 11 hours on the dash of a Ryder truck.

I remember taking her to the vet, dumping her out of the carrier, and the vet tech proclaiming: "My god, she swallowed a football!"

She continues to be an avid catnip farmer, sometimes actually sleeping the bowl so she can totally immerse herself in the experience.

When I took her to be spayed, I also requested that she be de-clawed. When I went to pick her up, they told me they were unable to do the declawing because they couldn't keep her under anesthesia long enough. Apparently she would awake and attack! They finally gave up. They couldn't get her out of the cage after her recovery either. She was a hellion. They sent me back there with some oven mitts, a towel, and cat treats. I came away bloody and battered.

Now she just has 1 fang left in the front. Our little snaggle-tooth.

She spends the bulk of her days now sleeping & eating (only the most expensive vet-prescription food of course), and pooping on the floor. Occasionally she still enjoys peeing in laundry baskets, boxes, and camping chairs.

Terrier Time!

Tomorrow is Porter's favorite event of the year: the Bluegrass Working Terrier Association's Spring Fling!

Porter indulges his inner-terrier on most of our walks, but this is the event that lets everyone know what a rodent-hound he really is! He gets to lure course, do some go-to-ground, barn hunt, brush hunt, and even bob for hot dogs.

He has made such a showing in this event in previous years, that they have now created separate classes for him. I guess they were tired of him beating all the Jack Russells  :)  And the guy that runs the go-to-ground portion now has a Cardigan of his very own. Coincidence? I think not...  :)

Anyway, here are some videos of Porter from last year "getting his terrier on!"

The Brush Hunt: Video   This was the first year they had this event. Porter was a little confused in the beginning.

Go To Ground: Video 1  & Video 2    Didn't think he'd fit in that little tunnel, did you? It's amazing what this dog will do for a little cage of rats at the end!

Lure Course:  Video  Porter loves chasing plastic bags!

We'll see what Stout thinks of the terrier stuff. I'm pretty sure he'll do anything that he sees Porter do. I only entered him in the Lure Coursing though. He's not had the pleasure of catching his own rodents yet, so his drive isn't refined enough. But he has caught many paper & plastic products!

CWCCA Specialty Herding Photos - Part 4

Thank you again to Perry Photographic! These are the last of the herding photos  :)

(He was too excited by the ducks to get any closer to the cone)

(Oops, that's a split)

(Wing to the face again!)

(And again)

(And again! You'd think he'd get the hint that he was just too close!)

(Another of his infamous lie-downs)

Up next, agility photos!

Back to Class

With all the Specialty news & photos, I realized it's been quite awhile since I posted Stout's progress in his online puppy class with Silvia Trkman!

The biggest news: we finally have a full independent pivot!

I'm sure the video isn't very impressive to some, but I am so proud! We have worked damn hard on this!

Everyone else in the class accomplished this back in March. But we just couldn't get it. And I was so frustrated, which in turn made Stout so frustrated. So we took a break from it, only trying it a couple times here & there to test. But when I tried again Sunday night, it was a miracle! A little corgi miracle!

So why is this little trick so important? It's the secret to great heeling. Check it out here.

And his progress in "4 in a box:"

Other people in the class have their dogs standing in little food dishes. But those dogs are also not corgi shaped with corgi legs! I like the arch I'm seeing in his back and the understanding of where his feet are. Normal dogs (aka border collies) in the class are exhibiting the same things, they just have to work down to a 6" diameter bowl before you see it  :)  Corgis do it in cake pans  :)
