Because in practice Mom carries yummy stuff and rewards at frequent intervals?
The hardest part for a Novice dog is learning the routine of "yummies come AFTER the run" -- because 99.9% of us all do as you do and carry a reward and give it frequently during training. At some point it would behoove us to wean them from this, but there's something extremely satisfying about seeing how awesome our dogs are capable of being, so we choose instead to keep carrying their reward and thus rewarding OURSELVES with these awesome runs. Then we go to trials and cry. ;o)
It's one of those things that I've always known the answer to, yet I keep doing things the same way I always have because I'm greedy for those awesome-feeling runs in practice.
I've found that I have to tell people to ignore Smooch my Chase (baddog) girl before we go into the ring and while we're in the ring. She's a lilttle offended that her "friends" don't fawn all over her but I'm happy because she's finally paying attention to ME! And the random treats are gone from the ring as well unless we're working on a new concept. I have the good stuff (roased chicken) at the crate. Good luck. I love how happy they and outgoing they are but it has it's downside in performance venues. LOL
